AutoCAD and drafting

Does anyone know where I can get a cheap version of AutoCAD?  I can use the University's computers, but with the weather here, it's a pain getting to the library when the lab is open.   Not sure if it's worth buying AutoCAD??? ---but I am taking a scene design class, and that is where I'm planning my concentration to be, so maybe I should?
I have a project due soon where we are drafting simple things (learning how to use AutoCAD)  It usually frustrates me...If anyone has any tips that would help!  But as for right now, I don't have any specific questions, but I'll get on and ask if I do!

I was also wondering if anyone had a good link for tech production symbols...this is the list:
Flat
Archway
Doorway with Swing direction
Window
Sliding Door
Two way Door
Casement window
Drapery
Platform
Regular tread staircase
Ramp

I think I'm just nervous about  drafting it right.
